Is my employer being unethical or illegal?

While I was working for a company I accepted another job with a different company and I'm employed there right now. However, before I left the old company the new comany asked me if i had any way of getting the mailing list and sending it to the new company. I felt very un comfortable about doing that so I didn't and they have asked me recently if I have any friends that work at the old company that would give them the mailing list. I find it to be stealing. However, I don't know what is ok and what isn't.

It's not OK.

As a matter of fact, I'm currently defending someone who did something not all that dissimilar - and his new company is likely to get sued, too.
