Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Marriage ceremony

A is the religious leader of the religion that B and C practice. They want to get married so they ask him to perform the ceremony. He agrees after telling them that he takes such duties very seriously and spends a lot of time and effort writing a sermon, thinking about the couple's particular personalities and preparing some materials he likes to give to the couple. He also tells them that the charge for his service is $ 2,000 and they agree. The morning of the ceremony, B and C have a huge argument and cancel their wedding. A demands his $2,000 for everything he has prepared but they refuse to pay, saying that they agreed to pay him the money for marrying them, which he was not going to do. How could A have avoided this mess?

Thank you!

Re: Marriage ceremony

I represent a major entertainment service on Long Island that provides bands for weddings and special occasions.

I prepare a written contract that has been upheld in Court. The written contract sets forth the price and cancelation terms. Under the cancelation terms, the bride and groom owe different amounts depending on the date of cancelation. For example, cancelation 3 months before the wedding 3/4 of money is returned. Cancelation 30 days before the wedding and and 1/2 money is returned. Cancelation 1 day beofre the wedding and no money is returned.

You would benefit from a written agreement with a fair cancelation policy.

Mike.
