Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Mechanic's Lien

I had a mechanic's lien placed on my reidence by a contractor one week after I stated to him that I wanted to keep my final payment until he's finish the complete job. I'm in Elmont, NY, does this mechanic's lien take priority over my mortgage that I had for 3 years? Also the amount he is requesting far exceeds the amount he owes and hr did not pay the sub-contractors what do I do.
