notarizing documents out of state

I am a NJ Notary, for years I have notarized documents in NY, my company is located in both states and I have worked out of both offices, are there any laws or statutes prohibiting me from doing this? NY documentation that I have notarized asked for a copy of a certificate be attached if notarized by a non-NY notary.

Typically, notaries are only authorized to notarize within their jurisdiction. So you would need to be certified in NY to notarize in that state. When your state has you become certified in a particular county/parish, these sometimes authorize you to notarize in an adjacent county/parish. But I have not hear of states doing the same. Contact the NJ agency that certified you and they will tell you if NJ has an agreement with NY. Technically, you will probably have to be in NJ to properly exercise your authority as a NJ notary.
