Legal Question in Business Law in New York
pay
my employer, a chef, did not pay for
4 weeks, including my tips. I was
naive and thought it was because he
was just reopening. Instead, I
suspect shady dealings and
demanded I get paid. I got a check
for all due, but what happens if it
bounces?

Re: pay
You should bring the check to the bank from which it was drawn and ask them to verify that the funds are available. If they are, you can cash the check right then and there or you can bring the check to deposit at your own bank. If the funds are not available you can hold on to the check and check back every few days until the funds are in fact available. Best,
Re: pay
Further, if the money is not there or the check bounces you should speak with a lawyer about possibly filing suit and reporting him or her to the Department of Labor. Best,
