Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Payment for Professional Services

I am a Speech Language Patholgist with a contract with

the local Health Department to provide services to

children. My billing relies on paperwork from

school districts. A local school district requested my

services, which I delivered from 1/02-5/02. The original

paperwork was incorrect and did not reflect the fact

that he was receiving in home therapy services. I

submitted billing to the county 8/30/02. I

have repeatedly called the school to request an

ammended IEP so I can get paid. The secretary always

tells me that they are working on it but nothing ever gets

done. I am currently owed $960.00, which the county

says they will be glad to pay if the appropriate

paperwork is received from the school district. I am

frustrated, as both the county and school admit that I

am owed the money, but no one ever completes the

necessary paper work. I truly believe that they are trying

to put me off until I give up, but $960.00 is a lot of

money and I don't know where to turn. If I set a

precedent for allowing bills to go unpaid, I could destroy

my business. I can't afford an attorney. What should I

do?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Payment for Professional Services

Send a letter to the school district recalling the history of your dealings with the district to date. Include an invoice. Make a formal demand that you be paid in full. I expect someone will get on top of it. If you still haven't been paid in 4 weeks bring a claim against the school district in Small Claims Court, my bet is you won't have to.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can call my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation or in the alternative, I can be reached for on-phone low-cost legal consultation at 1-800-275-5336 x0233699.
