Protecting a marketing idea if you're not a marketer

I have an excellent idea for a TV comercial for a product based on a real experience that happened to me about two weeks ago. I would like to submit it to the company (''Co.X'') or offer it to a marketing firm employed by Co.X. My concern is, is there any way to prevent said organization(s) from just using the idea I provide without compensation? I'm vaguely familiar with patent law, but not at all with copyright law.

In addition to copywrite, I would also do the old poor mans copywrite and mail the idea to yourself, make sure you get a postmark and keep it sealed when you receive it.

Yes, there are things you can do to protect yourself. Besides copyrighting your creative work, you would want the company to whom you desire to share this idea execute a confidentiality agreement.
