Legal Question in Business Law in New York
I received a check from a friend, I went to her bank to cash it. The teller asked if I had an account there, when I said no...she said she would have to charge me $5.00 to cash it. Is this legal?

No. The teller is a scam artist. If it's a national bank, I would contact the comptroller of the currency. This teller is trying to rip off check-cashers and s/he's likely corrupt in other ways as well. (Serious problem banks have had for years: tellers don't get much more than minimum wage and they have tens of thousands of dollars at their fingertips. Sometimes, especially right after the 4th of July, tellers have over a quarter million in the till. And not all of them deserve that trust. You ran into one of them.)
