Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Returned checks

I run a small home based business. A customer issued me a check w/ NSF. We don't currently have a return check policy, & I wanted to know what steps to take, ie- call the customer first? send a certified letter? Thank you for any assistance

Re: Returned checks

The more friendly you can be toward the customer at this juncture, the greater your likelihood of getting paid, and the greater the goodwill you will engender (which is worth more than some piece of merchandise or a service any day); you will, however, need a paper trail showing your collections activity. Later, if being friendly doesn't work, it'll be time to haul out the heavy guns and do the certified letter routine. If certified mail doesn't work, you may have to send the matter to collections.

Good luck.
