Legal Question in Business Law in New York
Can I run a business out of my finished basement? I am a piano teacher. It is not legal to live in There is a separate exit and plenty of windows . There is a business next door to me.

It is probably against the code to run a business from your basement without proper variances. Your biggest issue may be obtaining liability insurance just in case of an incident. If the neighbors do not complain, you may be able to give "private lessons" from your basement. Why don't you inquire from your local building dept? It may be worth your while to obtain necessary licenses and hang your shingle in the front yard.
