Ask for ID in the US

Is there any state I can not ask for ID or drivers license before I show any jewerly?

Um...why would you want to show jewelry (or other physically-small-but-very-valuable goods) without having your customer provide you with proper ID? If the person to whom you're showing the jewelry grabs and runs -- otherwise known as "theft," which is sometimes done with guns or other lethal weapons --, you would have less than you could have had to catch him/her. (BTW, you ARE copying down the ID number and issuing authority or, better, photocopying the ID itself when you see the ID, right?)
