Legal Question in Business Law in New York

Verbal Contract

A friend needed a new septic system @ his business. He got 3 estimates from $40-$50,000. A friend of his is in the business. He asked him to do the work. The plumber said- ''Do you know how much this will cost''. My friend answered ''yes''. There was no price ''actually'' discussed, and no contract. The plumber did the work, and gave my friend a bill for $88,000. Is my friend liable to pay this? Was there a verbal contract involved? The bill was clearly avove & beyong reasonable cost.

Thank you

Karen

Re: Verbal Contract

Obviously he didn't know what the septic tank would cost. While there was no contract created by what you describe he would be responsible for the reasonable value of the services provided and by the way it is possible dependingo nthe work done, that the value could exceed $50,000
