Legal Question in Business Law in New York

I was working with someone as an independent contractor for the last 4 years. We recently had a falling out and I was terminated. I have personal belongings that are in his office. I didn't want to go back and get them on my own so not to be accused of trespessing or stealing. I have requested a time to pick up my property but he hasn't responded to my request. What is the proper procedure that I need to do in order to get my stuff back?

Thanks,

Jeff

Any attorney will say you need to keep attempting to contact the person. You may also want to look into whether or not you really were an independent contractor. Many independent contractors are really employees in disguise. The employer wants to name them independent contractors so it doesn't have to contribute to their social security, unemployment, etc. Your local labor department can help you out with this issue. Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
