Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

my 17 years old

my son who is 17 was catch in a local store trying to take a pair of shades value $40. when they called me i ask the manager to call the police. he has no needs for this. he was arrested and dsince he is an honor student the judge gave him one day commnity serv. today i received a letter saying to pay $500. and that they represent the store. they said that if i don't pay they will take me to civil court. what should i do? pl help me i don't know if they are correct. my son already pay for his error

There is a law that says the store can collect for its costs. You should take the letter to the lawyer how handled your son's case and let him help you. In the future, do not use the courts to displine your children. That is a parents job not the government's.
