Re: Child Support after Legal Name change
This answer applies to Georgia. If your child support obligation arose under New York law, this answer may not apply.
A name change does not relieve you of a court ordered child support obligation. If, however, what occurred was in fact an adoption by another, you may have the right to have your child support obligation terminated by the court. Please note, that you must return to the court to have this obligation terminated.
I note that you said that you had no notice of the name change. If in fact there were an adoption, you would have to be notified, as your parental rights would have been terminated at that time as well. See an attorney.
This answer, though responsive to the question is general in nature. It is not designed to be and should not be relied on as your sole source of information when analyzing and resolving a specific legal issue. Each fact situation is different; the laws are constantly changing. If you have specific questions regarding a particular fact situation, I urge you to consult with competent legal counsel.
