Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

A dear friend passed away about a month ago and I wanted to ask who gets the money in his bank account, his girlfriend who was living with him for 5 years or his parents?

Depends on if there was a will and what was in it (assuming only his name was on the bank account). The intestacy (no will) laws use marriage, then blood relations (wife, kids, parents, siblings, nephews and nieces...)
