Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

my father just passed away in january and had recently changed his life ins. beneficiary to his girlfriend, he was still married to my mom, the girlfriend passed away 2 months later after receiving the check and now her kids have the money, is there any legal way to obtain the funds now, we his children believe the money should now be returned to his wife/children
