Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

So, my friend gave me her dog with his papers 3 months ago because her landlord would not let her keep the dog in her apartment, since no dogs were allowed in the building. We first tried to help her find someone to take the dog, but no one wanted him. As a last resort we took him and made it clear we did not have any money to give her for him, all we could do is provide him with a loving home, food, water, scheduled vet appointment, etc. We did her a favor and took the dog and saved her being evicted by her landlord. About a month after we've had him she calls asking for money, because she still owes the breeder for the dog. We tell her we don't have any money to give her and if she needs to take the dog back she can, she said no she wants him to stay with us. Now after 3 months she has moved to an apartment building that allows dogs and wants him back. By this time we have invested time and money into the dog and love him and want to keep him as a part of our family. Recently, she keeps calling us telling us if she sees us outside she is going to beat us up and asking where we live to fight us for the dog. I believe the dog is ours since we have his papers. What can I do other than change my phone number? When I ignore her calls she calls my job. Do I have to take her to court to rule that the dog is mine?
