Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

Jury duty

I was wondering if I can be forced to serve jury duty. I live 6 months in NY and 6 months in SC. Can I be made to stay in Ny if called for jury duty?

Thank you

Re: Jury duty

Probably. Taken to the logical extreme, you're arguing that you can't be compelled to sit for a jury anywhere, which clearly is not the right result. Were that the case, the rich would have two homes in different states and never have to serve jury duty...oh wait, that's probably true isn't it! :o))

Still, you can appeal to the judge's sense of fairness when called. Explain your situation, but if you're present in the state and are just using this as a theoretical excuse, then expect to serve.

Re: Jury duty

The short answer is yes, you will have to serve. The longer naswer is if the date of your summons is inconveinent to you you can ask for one postponement and you will get it, no questions asked. The hitch is that you will have to pick the date that you are ready to serve within 6 months of the postponement and you can be sure a summons will arrive within 4 weeks of that time and that you should be ready to serve absent a good excuse as to why you cannot.
