Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York
The Lawyer Did Me Wrong
I was forced to leave a job as administrator in June 2001, at the largest NYC mental health agency because of harassment, discrimination, and unsupportive directors. Lost much: career, ability to get another position, pension, mental stability, etc. Went into a contingency agreement with a civil rights attorney 3 months later who agreed to do my case for the typical percentage, assuring me that I had, as I felt, a very strong case. We met once in his office at the NY Bar Assoc.(which increased his reputation, in my eyes) to go over the facts. He asked for, and still has, my documents that substantiate my claim (though, I do have copies of some, as does the agency). For 3 years my calls, registered letters, etc. got little response except for an occasional ''I promise to file tomorrow.'' Researched recently online and discovered that he has been suspended from practicing law temporarily and sanctioned by a NY judge. What am I to do now? Do I have a case of malpractice against him? Can I, also, file my own claim so that I do not go over the statute of limitations (and is that, as he said, 3 years, and, if so, 3 years from when?) Thank you for your interest (if there is any!)

Re: The Lawyer Did Me Wrong
Eployment discrimination cases are very complicated and involve certain specific administrative and legal requirements. You definitely need to contact a new attorney who regularly handles such cases and may, unfortunately, need to call a malpractice lawyer. There are deadlines for those kind of cases too, so do not delay. While our office can not handle your NY case(s), I will be glad to speak with you about this if you desire. Best wishes.
