Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

Living out of car in new york

I am a current college student at a school in Upstate New York. I am currently sleeping in my parked car in the schools commuter lot. I have purchased a parking lot pass to have my car there. Am I legally allowed to sleep in my car overnight there? I can not find the answer to this online.

It appears that you would be in violation of Penal Law Section 240.35 (5) which reads that it is it is a violation of the statute when:

5. Loiters or remains in or about school grounds, a college or

university building or grounds, not having any reason or relationship

involving custody of or responsibility for a pupil or student, or any other

specific, legitimate reason for being there, and not having written

permission from anyone authorized to grant the same;

While you can probably get by for a while, you can be given a ticket. It is a violation with 15 days and a fine up to $250.

Good luck.
