Membership policies
Can a health club deny me membership because I refuse to give them access to my checking account.

The Simple answer is Yes. They are free to set the terms of the contract pursuant to which they will agree to give you access to their "health club." The method of payment, (such as automatic charges against your credit card) is a term which they can demand. They know that your only choice is to agree to their demand or find another health club.
