Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

ny gun law

I would like to get a shotgun in NY for sports, but was convicted of a driving without a license felony about 10 years ago. My record is spotless since then. Someone told me I could get a citizen in good standing cert or something like that. Does anyone know if that is true?
