Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

How to proceed if defendant doesn't reply to civil summons and complaint''

I filed a civil summons and complaint in NY Supreme court. I recieved the index number and served the papers and have an affidavit of service. The defendant was supposed to reply within 30 days of service. Yet they have not replied. The next step was to fill out a RJI and request for preliminary conference. These documents require the defendants legal representatives, insurance carriers etc. If they haven't replied how can I fill out the RJI and Request for conference to serve this on them? How am I able to proceed? Thank you for your assistance.

Telephone the clerk's office & ask to find out the procedure for a "default." This means the defendant loses b/c the defendant did not appear within the timeframe allotted.
