Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

Religious Discrimination

My friend is Jewish. The small claims court judge has refused to reschedule a hearing that they set for Oct 13, which is Yom Kippur. This date is a high-holy day for Jewish people. They do not work or leave the house, except to attend the Temple. Can the judge refuse my friends request and force him to violate his Jewish law?
