If you are served papers - by a process server - and you tell the process server "no I'm not served" have the landlord return the papers to the lawyer saying he "found them in the hallway" what happens next?

You are served regardless of what you tell the process server. If you fail to respond a default judgment is very likely to be entered against your interest.
