slander and libel

Can a person sue for slander and libel over comments made on a public page like myspace or facebook? Also if the person who is getting sued was unaware of these comments, maybe due to the other person editing comments, is there still possibility for a suit?

There can be a lawsuit for defamation of character for Facebook entries. The editing issue is one that I would need more information to address.
