Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

my son and 3 friends rented an apartment. they were 2 couples. it was a month to month lease. my son was the only one with money at the time so he put up the 550.00 security and the first months rent, with the agreement that the friends would pay the next months rent. after the first month, the landlord, who lived in the same building, told my son and his significant other that they made too much noise that they should leave. so they left. the landlord will not return his security deposit. he said we should get the money from the couple that are still living in the apartment. we just came from small claims court where the judge basically agreed. the landlord has also not drawn up a new lease agreement with the couple and the other people that have since moved in with them, in other words my sons name is still on the lease. i really thought this was a cut and dry situation and was shocked that the judge did not agree. am i wrong? and is there anything i can do about this?
