Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

Taking Keys When Pulled Over

I was pulled over for speeding by a police officer. Then 30 seconds after he let me go, I was pulled over again. The officer took my car keys and said there may be a warrant out for my arrest and after searching his computer of course there wasn't. It turned out someone with my same name and date of birth had a warrant out for their arrest. When I was pulled over both times, I cooperated with the officer but is it legal for the officer to take my keys or is this a violation of my civil rights?

Re: Taking Keys When Pulled Over

It was legal if the officer had a reasonable belief that you were the person who had a warrant. It sounds like the police acted appropriately, after all after checking the information you were let go and not arrested.
