Legal Question in Technology Law in New York

DJ from computer

I work at the Wall Street Journal online and I'm doing some research on a possible story about someone who uses their computer/laptop to DJ (preferably at a club or bar type of establishment). I'm specifically looking for a DJ who plays music downloaded from the Internet (i.e. Web sites like Napster).

(My research is in its beginning stages but so far I have found only one person who has occasionally DJed and has gotten most of his music from Napster.)

My question is -- is this kind of DJing legal? If the DJ does not play music from his/her own CDs, would they technically have to pay for each song they play?

Thanks.

Re: DJ from computer

This is quite illegal. It is a public performance for profit of a copyrighted work. That is likely why you have no responses. It is like asking "I am doing an article on current bank robbers. Would those who have robbed a bank recently please identify themselves and give me details."
