Legal Question in Technology Law in New York

Posted pictures and write-up of petstore on website, now being threatened with l

I was emailed pictures of a pet store in NH. I was told a story about the care of a particular animal in the store. I posted that story and 2 pictures. I now understand that was wrong. I have received an email from a lawyer threatening to sue me if I do not remove the page, post numerous retractions, and contact via email every person who accessed that page, which I believe is impossible.

I have removed the page and all references to this pet store, as well as posting a message stating any reference to this pet store on the website were false. Beyond that, I either will not or can not carry out the other requests. What are my chances of being sued and if I am, what are the chances of having to pay damages?

Your odds of being sued successfully can only be addressed with a lot more information (such as the reasonableness of your belief in the original story, what you said exactly, how much harm was caused to the victim, etc.).

But your odds of being sued at all might be determined by how you act now. Basically, it is a human relations question--if you act nice and repentant, it may end here; but if you are nasty and argumentative, it may go on to court.

Your best bet may be to have someone on your behalf (that is, someone who has no emotional stake in the dispute, and whose apology cannot be deemed an admission of fault) make nice with the other lawyer.
