Legal Question in Construction Law in New York
I'm in the process of becoming a foster parent. One of the requirements is that I get a certificate of occupancy for my home. Because the house was built prior to when they started issuing CO's there is not one on file. I asked the code enforcer for a letter stating that they don't have one on file. He is refusing to give me that letter until I bring my house up to todays codes. I am not asking for a building permit nor am I asking him to lie. Am I legally obligated to bring my house up to todays codes even though I am not requesting a building permit?
