Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

cancelling a contract

signed a catering contract 6 months ago for an affair to take place in February 2002..In August called the hall make an inquiry and was informed the business was sold and that we would receive a letter to meet with the new owners. (Unfortunately, we are forced to cancel this affair and want to get our deposit of $1000 returned to us.) To date no such letter has been received...went there after i called and set up a meeting last week. When I arrived at the hall i found a note from the caterer stating he had to be somewhere else (never notified us). After several calls finally spoke to new owners. Referred us back to original owner they referred us back to new owners..We were informally informed that since it is over a year away we should be able to get our deposit back. Inasmuch as we have had no contact with the new caterer, how do we resolve this....Thank you.

Re: cancelling a contract

Here's what you do: You stop trying to reason with two weasels and you sue them both in small claims court. Let the judge decide who's to blame. Don't cut people or businesses like this any slack or they'll just keep delaying. Good luck!
