Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

I had my car repaired by a shop and I went to drive it home and it was worse than what it was but the repair guy assured me that it just had a plugged catalytic convertor and I could drive it home after already repairing the engine. He had put on the code machine and said that number 4 cylinder was misfiring so he replaced the ignition coil. The next day I brought it back to him because it was worse and he said the fuel injector needed to be replaced. Then he replaced that but said the car was running rough and it had a plugged catalytic convertor but assured me it would be fine to drive home. I drove it 25 miles home in real rough shape. It was worse than when it was there. I drove it the next morning 7 miles and the car died. I had it towed to the shop and they said the engine was blown and it was a different cylinder that was the problem and I needed to pay for the engine. I want to know if the shop should be responsible for the repairs? They are saying I need to pay for the engine. What can I do legally?

You are not only entitled to your money back, but could pursue legal action for consequential damages inclusive of blown engine and the renting of a car while your car is being fixed. Initially though, you better conference your issues with at least two savvy mechanics and discover what went wrong and what should have been done to alleviate the problem once your car was in the shop.
