my dry cleaner lost my suit. i paid $1000 for it several years ago. What am I entitled to in compensation?

Assuming you can demonstrate negligence on behalf of the cleaner, the damage would be the cost of the suit less depreciation. So, as a gross example, if you paid $1,000 for the suit in 2000, the present value of the suit - 10 years later - would be of little value.

You should try to negotiate a reasonable price with the dry cleaner. Start at X and negotiate down. The suit is too old for you to get $1,000 or even 1/2 the value. However, the dry cleaner may want to negotiate to avoid the bad publicity of a small claims lawsuit.
