Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York
My mother in law passed away in July and like after 5, months after we got a called saying she won a prize. My husband spoke to this man and after him telling me there was no fee involved, he told my husband it will be $130 fee. He said we needed to pick it up at the post office and that the $130 was a insurance fee in case the prize got lost. My husband gave him the house address thinking they will send us some information before he decided if he wanted the prize. This man said we now have a contract with him and if we don't pick up the prize my husband is going to get sue. Now he keeps calling us saying we are getting sue, and that my husband can't leave this country. He is US citizen by the way.I have contacted the BBB and consumer affairs and all they have told me is that this company was close, and that the owner is getting some legal action about it. this man sounds so convincing and I don't know what to do? He says he is the owner and his phone number is in Massachusetts but the company address is in Florida. Can he sue us ?

This is a scam. If you have his name, phone number and address, file a complaint with the Attorney General. http://www.ag.ny.gov/bureaus/consumer_frauds/about.html
