Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

pre employment screening

I am applying for several teaching jobs. The potential employers want me to sign off on an extensive employee background check before the interview. I understand as a teacher, they would want to do a criminal/sex offender check, but do I have to agree to a driver liscense check, a credit check, an educational check, and so on?

Re: pre employment screening

You do not have to agree to any of it, unless you want the job. They may not ask about your prior arrests (only about convictions) and they cannot ask questions about your race, creed or sexual persuasion. They cannot ask if you intend to get pregnant or are married or have children of your own.

I assume the district has a Teacher's union. Speak to the president of the local or to a shop steward about district policy.

Good Luck.
