Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York
I recently purchased a car, I signed all the papers and drove the car home. It was a used car from MD and i live in NY.The dealership said that they have to register the car and will send me plates. They only charged me 6% tax and in my state is 8.375%. Do I have to pay the difference?

Sales tax is assessed by the state in which a used car is registered. However, to register a car in any state, you must maintain an address there. In your case, the dealership should have registered the car in New York (where you maintain your residence) and not Maryland. Technically, because you are living in New York, the car should be registered there and yes, you would be liable for the 8.375%.
