Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

My son in law was hurt and out of work so my daughter and him got evicted from their townhouse. They never paid the money owed and are being sued. I never signed anything and am being harassed by the attorney for the rental company to give them information as to where my daughter lives etc. They sent me official papers demanding information. Do I have to give information about them? What can I do to stop this and protect myself?

Are you named on any of the papers (co-signer, etc.)? In any case, YOU said YOU never signed anything as a co-signer or something. It sounds like they cannot harrass you. Unfortunately, usually, collection agencies hire new graduates (inexpensive labor) and operate just this side of the line between legal and illegal (OK, and often crossing into the illegal area).

Maybe you can call a local attorney and ask if you can fax over the papers real quick or else mail them or bring them over so he/she can see what they are trying to do to you. Maybe he can cite a statute they are violating so you can tell them to "Hit the road-you are violating XXXX.YYY"
