Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York
I had a verbal agreement with a contractor to perform $477.00 worth of work. He performed the work and sent me a bill for this amount. On the bottome of the bill it said that interest would occur after 30 days at 10.5% per month. I was injured and out of work and over the course of the next few years I paid him a total of $235.00. I never received another printed statement he would call and remind me that I had a balance and I would send another partial payment. I then didn't hear from him for a few years. He recently contacted me and wants over $1000.00 because of all the interest that has accrued. If the math is correct am I legally obligated to pay all this interest even though he has not sent me any further bills? I have received notice I must appear in small claims court.

My impression is the court will settle this matter for a maximum of $300 when all is said and done.
Offer the remainder of money owed at this time to settle. If the contractor does not agree, do not fret. Appear in court.
