Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

car seizure

my car got seized due to a judgment i didnt know about i dont have the money to pay the debt nor due i have the money to pay the lot they are storing my vehicle in. i want to sign the lease over to them but i want to retrieve my property and nyc plates on my vehicle, they wont allow me to get anything from my vehicle. Is this legal and if not what can i do, the company that has my car doesnt want to supply me with an impound receipt either!

If you did not get proper notice of the proceeding which ended up with the seizure of your vehicle you can go to court and obtain relief there. I don't think you have the knowledge and experience to do this without counsel...If you don't have the resources to retain counsel, call the local bar association and see if they can't find counsel who could represent you PRO BONO (free) OR try the internet by searching for FREE REPRESENTATION IN NEW YORK.
