Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

can my checking account be frozen

My sole income is U.S. Federal Government Social Security/Disability. This is a direct deposit into my checking account once a month. Can a collection agency freeze my checking account? I have no other source of income, I do not own a car, a house, property, no other bank accounts, no funds from other sources. My only income is my Disability check. I have read that a Social Security/Disability check can not be garnished or touched.

Can my checking account be frozen?

Re: can my checking account be frozen

Yes to both questions. How does your creditor know the money is from SSI? You must go to court to get the account unfrozen and prove the source of funds. Then the account will be unrestrained.

Good Luck
