collection agency attempting to gather private information
In New York State, can a collection agency legally ask my employer for private information? I found today that someone has queried my employer to find out if I am employed there, what my SS# is, my address, monthly earnings, home and work address and other information.
There is a spot on the form for me to acquiesce to providing the information, but only if it's required by law -- nowhere on the form does it say what it is for. I only know the name because I recognize it from the shifty, but persistent phone calls I get from this guy.
It seems like he is fishing for my SSN because there is no such debt listed on my credit report as outstanding and the debt is supposedly from 2006.
Is this as fishy as it seems?

Techncally they can call your employer for location information. Their problem is how to do that an not violate the FDCPA. I would be interested in knowing how many times they called your employer, and how they explained who they were. The answers to these questions will usually show a FDCPA violation.

yes. He may be in violation of the fair debt and collection and you could receive damages and attorneys fees.
