Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

collection notice 2 years after judgment

I received a collection notice for an old bill, so I took a look at my credit report, and it showed a judgement in 2002 from the old bill, can I still get a notice from a collection agency 2 years later after the judgement? And how should I handle this?

Re: collection notice 2 years after judgment

Payoff the judgment if is is for real. Tell the collections company that you know nothing about the debt and dispute it...nothing more.

Yes they can. A debt is a debt even if it is a judgment...it is an uncollected debt and that is what collection agencies do...You should try to settle it and get the judgment satisfied ( you don't have to pay it in full to get it satisfied as long as you make a deal to settle it)...BUT MAKE SURE THE DEAL IS IN WRITING SIGNED BY THE CREDITOR OR THE AGENT FOR THE CREDITOR...do not send money on an ORAL agreement...
