Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

collection on an nsf check 4 yrs ago

I recently checked my credit report. I have found a supposed collection account status from a store from 2001. I have never recieved anything about this debt from this store, I do not have a credit account with this store, the only thing i can think of is maybe a check bounced, but I have never recieved anything from this store nor my bank for a bounced check. I checked all of my credit reports last year, and this didn't show up until now. Date of status & report date (collection as of ) is 12/ 2004.

The original credit amt is $330, but recent balance is $375, recent payment $25.00, but I have had no knowledge of this acct until now, and have not made any payment, as I did not know about this. Why didn't they contact me, why is it now on my report, and how do I go about rectifying this situation? can they put this on my report without my being notified or contacted in re: to this debt? I have also shopped here recently, since 2001, and I haven't been told about it. I am clueless as to what it is. Do I call the collection agency?

Write to the reporting agencies CERTIFIED MAIL and include a copy of the credit entry. Tell them you are disputing the entry and you want them to verify it. If they don't verify it in 60 days, OFF IT COMES. (they have to ask at the store for verification and the store has to send them the information) You may have to write more than once...you have to keep records of your letters and make sure you CC: whatever authority exists in NY State to force compliance...like the State Attorney General's Office. Eventually, if they don't give you proof, it'll go away. Keep at it...expect to send several letters. Good luck
