Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
College says I owe, even though I never went
I was enrolled as a full-time student. I applied for financial aid.
About 3 weeks into the semester I had to drop out.
I contacted my department and in writing told them my situation.
I never recieved a check from financial aid or anything.
Now they say I owe them roughly $800.00.
They cannot supply a transcript or a record of where ''my money'' went.
Do I have a leg to stand on?
Thank you,
Zachariah sebastian

Re: College says I owe, even though I never went
You probably owe the money. Most institutions have a timetable for early withdrawl that refunds a decreasing percentage of your tuition the longer you remain enrolled. You have to consult the student manual that you received when you enrolled. This office does collection for a variety of colleges and universities and three weeks into the program usually does not allow a refund. You are entitled to know where any payments were applied but for the most part student loans are withdrawn if you don't attend classes...you can try to settle for a reduced payment...that's your best bet.
