I reside in NY,Suffolk county. My mother is in a nursing home and was on medicare, which only pays 80% of her bills. They are trying to get a judgement against me because i signed her admission forms not realizing it stated I would be responsible for money she owes.I am retired and cant afford a lawyer but dont qualify for legal aid.I went to court once and have been representing myself. They sent me a letter that I didnt have to sign for.For a court date for a compliance conference. What exactly is that?and what would happen if I just dont show up.Can I get adjournment on this?Thank you for your help.

A compliance conference is held to verify everything that the Pre trial order stated has been complied with. If you fail to appear, the judge could strike your answer and grant a default judgment against you. You can try to adjourn by calling the attorney for the other side or writing to the judge.
