Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Cosigning for car loans

My X boyfriends sister cosigned for me to get a car, and now since her brother and I are no longer a couple she wants her name taken off as cosigner. I'm not sure what to do or how this law works. I have never been late on a car note so please tell me what I should do.

Re: Cosigning for car loans

Getting a lender to release a co-obligor is a "matter of grace." That is, the lender has no obligation to release the co-signer. You could get the co-signer off by refinancing the car. Otherwise, it's up the the lender and so far as I know, lenders generally do not release co-signers.
