Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Use of credit card

My brother used my credit card to pay for his household expenses when he was in need. He ran it up and now is having trouble paying for it and it is affecting my credit. Is there anyway I can get the debt in his name(has bad credit rating) or his significant other's? She has ok credit. I did the same with his automobile financing. I know, write ''Stupid'' across my forehead! I was trying to help!

Re: Use of credit card

If her credit is good, have her take out a loan and repay your credit card bill in full.

This should accomplish things cleanly.

Good Luck.

Re: Use of credit card

Well...family obligations cannot be deemed acts of stupidity so don't beat yourself up. Unfortunately, if his significant other does not want to she does not have to pay off your brother's debts...so you might be stuck. You should approach softly and ask of there is anyway that the debt could be reduced and if they won't offer installments (after you present your story about how bad your credit is going to be...) A loan is another way out. Your alternatives are based on your brother's own finances and inclination to do the right thing. good luck.
