Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

credit card issue

I been suid by a collection office for a wrong amount of money ,the original amount was $500 dollars I did not hear from the credit card company or this agency for that matter for almost 4 years now they are suing me for 1.100 how can this be? and how can I fight this in court since I have no records from this mention credit ,I went to court and the clerk said that he will send me the appt with the judge in about 4 months.

I offered the collection agency to pay the 500 to close this case and they did not respond,please I need your advise ..thanks in advance

The amount probably grew because of late fees and interest added over the years.
